Principal Data Engineer, Hybrid

Job overview

The Principal Data Engineer role is hybrid, with two onsite days per week in San Diego, Long Beach, Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, or Oakland in the San Francisco Bay Area. Compensation is $85–$95 per hour. The role supports a healthcare technology company providing shared data infrastructure for nonprofit, community, and regional health plans. The principal engineer designs and delivers governed data platforms and products that unify clinical, claims, demographic, and provider data. The work enables analytics, automation, and AI use cases while setting engineering standards, influencing architecture, and mentoring data engineering colleagues.

What you'll do

• Design and implement scalable data pipelines, data lakes, warehouses, and marts
• build ELT/ETL solutions
• apply data modeling approaches
• partner with architecture, product, and solution design teams
• optimize cloud data platforms
• implement quality, validation, observability, lineage, and governance controls
• apply DevOps and DataOps practices
• mentor engineers
• support AI/ML-ready data assets.
