Shelter Veterinary Assistant

The Shelter Veterinary Assistant is an onsite, full-time position in Indianapolis, IN, paying $18–$21 per hour. The role supports IndyHumane’s shelter medicine program and its high-volume, low-cost vaccine clinic. The assistant helps provide medical care and maintain animal health by supporting intake examinations, preventive care, diagnostics, treatments, monitoring, and accurate records. The role also contributes to shelter operations and community-facing services through compassionate animal handling and collaboration with veterinary and shelter teams.

What you'll do

• Perform intake physical examinations
• administer preventive care and medications as directed
• monitor animal health and report concerns
• safely restrain animals
• collect samples and perform in-house diagnostic testing within training and competency
• assist with radiographs, wound care, rehabilitation, surgery preparation, and recovery
• maintain medical records
• support vaccine clinic appointments and client education
• follow biosecurity and safety protocols.
