Substation Protection & Controls Engineer

Job overview

The Substation Protection & Controls Engineer role is onsite in Lombard, IL, with a stated salary range of $100,000–$165,000 per year. The engineer works with client representatives and other Valdes Architecture & Engineering disciplines on high-voltage substation projects. The role develops protection and control designs and engineering packages, coordinates project details, and supports timely, budget-conscious delivery. It also provides technical guidance to junior staff and helps maintain client relationships throughout project work.

What you'll do

• Prepare control panel, schematic, wiring, and bill-of-materials design packages
• design protective relaying schemes for high-voltage substations
• perform AC and DC load calculations
• develop cable routing and utility interface designs
• coordinate drawings with designers
• communicate with client engineering representatives
• assist staff with on-time, on-budget engineering packages
• develop SCADA overviews, specifications, and sequence-of-operation documents.
