The position leads the Lincoln County Public Defender Office and provides court-appointed representation to eligible people under South Dakota law. The public defender oversees the office’s professional and administrative operations while exercising independent legal judgment. The role combines direct representation with leadership, supervision, case and resource management, and coordination with courts and justice-system participants, while protecting client confidentiality and the independence of defense counsel.

What you'll do

• Lead and administer the Public Defender Office
• establish policies, procedures, and case-management systems
• supervise, mentor, and evaluate attorneys and staff
• provide legal representation in matters within the office’s statutory responsibilities
• maintain an appropriate caseload
• handle proceedings including investigation, motions, negotiation, trial, sentencing, and appeals
• develop and administer the office budget
• maintain professional independence and client confidentiality
• coordinate appropriately with courts, county officials, and justice-system participants
• maintain required records and reports.
