The Principal Software Engineer — Data Storage Domain Lead role is onsite in Huntsville, AL, with a stated pay range of $151,000–$201,000 per year. SciTec develops technologies supporting U.S. national security and defense missions, including missile defense, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, space domain awareness, and aircraft survivability. This hands-on technical leadership role establishes and advances data storage practices across engineering teams. It evaluates storage technologies against representative workloads, provides reference implementations and guidance, and mentors engineers so mission-critical data processing and operational workflows can use reliable, well-performing persistence and retrieval systems.

What you'll do

• Assess storage technologies, data access patterns, recurring problems, and capability gaps
• benchmark representative workloads and maintain recommended storage technologies and practices
• document recommendations and architectures
• build reference implementations and templates
• guide data modeling, schema design, indexing, query planning, and performance
• advise on transactional behavior and consistency
• establish caching practices
• guide search, document, and object storage
• lead replication, partitioning, capacity planning, backup, recovery, and failure analysis
• partner with engineers through reviews, troubleshooting, and workshops
• collaborate with other domain leads
• update guidance and report adoption and outcomes.
