Principal Cloud Engineer

Job overview

The Principal Cloud Engineer role is in Charlotte, NC, with a base pay range of $110,000–$180,000 per year. The position is eligible for an annual incentive plan. The role advances cloud resilience engineering and infrastructure automation in Ally’s regulated financial services environment. The engineer defines enterprise cloud reliability strategy, designs recovery architectures, and leads resilience testing and migration work. By establishing reusable infrastructure, monitoring, and recovery practices and coaching application teams, the role helps improve service reliability and validated recovery readiness.

What you'll do

• Lead architecture discovery and define recovery objectives, dependencies, and multi-region requirements.
• Design AWS multi-region architectures, recovery controls, backup and recovery patterns, and secure landing-zone controls.
• Establish monitoring, dashboards, and FinOps practices.
• Design migration approaches and coordinate workload migrations and validation.
• Create reusable Terraform modules and CI/CD pipelines with security, approval, and drift controls.
• Run chaos engineering experiments and disaster recovery exercises, develop runbooks, establish resilience standards, and report recovery readiness and risks to leadership.
