Job overview

The Staff Computational Materials Scientist role is onsite in Devens, MA, with a salary range of $130,000–$200,000 per year. Commonwealth Fusion Systems is developing commercially viable fusion power plants, and the Materials and Processing Department supports the SPARC project and future ARC plant design. The scientist develops computational models and workflows to predict material properties in extreme environments and connect material structure and processing to performance. The work informs experiments, engineering decisions, and materials development while helping reduce uncertainty in materials needed for fusion power deployment.

What you'll do

  • Build and use computational toolsets and workflows to predict material properties in extreme environments with uncertainty bounds
  • identify chemical and microstructural features affecting performance
  • inform experimental design
  • develop material design-curve methodology with engineering teams
  • identify knowledge and experimental capability gaps addressable through simulation
  • benchmark material-property variability
  • create data workflows with Materials and Processing engineers
  • support materials specifications
  • and stay current with modeling techniques.
