Director of Payroll & Business Process Transformation

The Director of Payroll & Business Process Transformation role is hybrid in Chevy Chase, MD, with three days per week onsite. Compensation is $170,000–$230,000 per year. The position supports a mission-driven nonprofit organization modernizing Finance and Human Resources operations. The director leads payroll operations while redesigning processes using Workday, automation, and practical AI applications. The role implements and measures operational changes, maintains payroll continuity, and extends the transformation approach to other Finance and HR functions.

What you'll do

• Lead the payroll team and maintain accurate, timely, compliant payroll
• maintain controls, tax compliance, audit readiness, and continuity
• assess current payroll processes and workarounds
• design and implement a future-state operating model
• identify appropriate uses of Workday, automation, AI agents, and employee judgment
• partner with Technology and stakeholders to build, test, and implement solutions
• maintain payroll operations during change
• extend transformation to expenses, procurement, accounts payable, onboarding, benefits, and compensation
• establish and report operational measures
• lead employees through workflow and technology changes.
