Senior Information Technology Security Engineer

Job overview

The Senior Information Technology Security Engineer role is based onsite in Bethesda, MD, with onsite attendance required 3–5 days per week as needs change. Compensation is not specified. The engineer joins the National Library of Medicine’s Security Compliance team and supports protection of its IT infrastructure and mission-critical systems. The role implements and improves security controls across on-premises and cloud environments, supports federal compliance, and strengthens monitoring, vulnerability management, and secure cloud adoption. Working with the Information Systems Security Office, system administrators, and security teams, the engineer helps maintain the availability, integrity, and confidentiality of systems.

What you'll do

• Enhance and automate security and compliance checks
• evaluate emerging technologies, including AI capabilities
• implement and maintain security controls in on-premises and AWS, GCP, and Azure environments
• support identity and privileged access, vulnerability management, encryption, micro-segmentation, and centralized logging
• integrate and optimize SIEM and enterprise security tools such as Splunk and Tenable
• conduct threat modeling and cloud security assessments
• advise developers, operations teams, and system owners
• analyze vulnerability data and support remediation
• maintain security documentation, procedures, and technical guidance.
