Peer Support Specialist – Women & Family Center

Job overview

The Peer Support Specialist role is onsite in Kansas City, MO. Compensation is $18 per hour, with a $3-per-hour differential for hours worked between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. City Union Mission’s emergency shelter provides short-term refuge and support for individuals and families in crisis. The specialist leads assigned shelter shifts and helps maintain a safe, dignified, structured environment. Through client support, volunteer coordination, and shift operations, the role contributes to the shelter’s immediate care and next-step support for residents.

What you'll do

• Provide leadership, mentorship, and support to clients and family units during assigned shifts
• maintain structure and accountability while engaging with clients
• coordinate mealtime and fellowship environments
• orient and support volunteers and interns
• oversee shift safety, cleanliness, task completion, and center flow
• assist with occupancy and census management
• report client observations, needs, and incidents
• monitor hygiene, shower, and laundry routines.
