Staff Engineer, Safety — X-BAT

The Staff Engineer, Safety — X-BAT role is onsite in Seattle, WA. Compensation is $175,000–$260,000 per year. Shield AI develops intelligent systems with a mission to protect service members and civilians; this role supports the X-BAT program. The engineer develops and verifies system-level safety requirements and helps ensure hazards are identified, mitigated, tracked, and addressed through design and certification. Working with system safety, airworthiness, systems engineering, cybersecurity, and technical teams, the role contributes to the safety baseline and readiness of the X-BAT platform.

What you'll do

• Derive, refine, and validate X-BAT safety requirements
• apply system safety methods including STPA, SSA, FTA, PHA, and FMEA to identify hazards and mitigations
• guide allocation and verification of safety requirements
• support safety case and certification evidence
• collaborate on cybersecurity-related safety requirements
• maintain the Hazard Tracking System
• prepare airworthiness and technical safety documentation
• support mishap and near-miss investigations
• participate in design reviews and readiness assessments
• engage with customer and DoD system safety representatives.
