Public Works Director

The Public Works Director role is full-time and onsite in Homer, Alaska. Pay is $51.76–$65.10 per hour. The director leads the City of Homer’s Public Works Department, which maintains and expands infrastructure and public services for the community. The director sets departmental direction and oversees operations, staff, budgets, and capital projects across city infrastructure and facilities. The role advances city priorities and helps ensure reliable public works services in coordination with the City Manager, City Council, employees, and community.

What you'll do

• Lead the department’s strategic planning and operations
• oversee water distribution and treatment, wastewater collection and treatment, streets, parks, vehicles, buildings, grounds, equipment, and capital improvements
• supervise and direct employees
• prepare operating and capital budgets
• coordinate project design, construction, permits, grants, and contracts
• monitor maintenance and equipment needs
• respond to public inquiries and complaints
• and attend City Council meetings as required.

Why this role

The posting requires at least five years of relevant public facilities, utilities, or transportation experience, including three years at a managerial level supervising professional staff. A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, planning, public administration, or a related field is desirable.
