988 Crisis Counselor

The 988 Crisis Counselor role is remote from a private home workspace within the Chicago area, with in-person trainings and meetings at the Chicago office as requested. Compensation is $24 per hour. The counselor responds to people experiencing emotional distress or mental health crises, assesses safety, provides de-escalation and safety planning, and connects callers with appropriate resources and follow-up support.

What you'll do

• Respond to incoming 988 Lifeline calls
• listen empathetically
• assess caller safety and risk using established protocols
• use de-escalation techniques
• collaborate on safety plans
• provide referrals to mental health services and community resources
• document interactions confidentially
• arrange follow-up
• coordinate with crisis response professionals
• follow intervention and escalation protocols
• and participate in training, huddles, coaching, and meetings.
