Principal Planner

Job overview

The Principal Planner role is hybrid in Silver Spring, MD, with in-office team days Tuesday through Thursday. The salary range is $120,000–$145,000 per year. Toole Design works on safer, more accessible streets, trails, parks, civic spaces, and mobility networks. The Principal Planner leads complex multimodal transportation project teams, provides strategic oversight, and ensures high-quality delivery. The role also supports stakeholder engagement, staff supervision and mentoring, workload planning, and recruitment for the growing planning team.

What you'll do

• Lead project teams on complex multimodal transportation projects and provide strategic oversight. Ensure high-quality project delivery
• engage stakeholders
• supervise and mentor planners
• manage workload and staff utilization
• and help recruit for the planning team. Support planning work including Vision Zero Action Plans, Active Transportation Plans, trail planning, Safe Routes to School, urban design and placemaking, and transportation planning and design contracts.
