The Seasonal Community Composting Assistant & Instructor role is onsite in New York, NY, with compensation of $26 per hour. The seasonal appointment runs from September 2026 through June 30, 2027, for up to 20 hours per week; the typical schedule is Tuesday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Education (Community Greening) department works with community groups across Brooklyn. The role provides technical assistance and composting education to community-based groups while developing and delivering horticulture programs. It supports community greening through instruction, events, outreach, coordination, and administrative work, including programs focused on compost, soil, and urban gardening.
What you'll do
- Design and facilitate compost- and soil-focused curricula, classes, and programs
- support the Brooklyn Urban Gardener program
- develop compost programs and educational events
- assist with nursery logistics and in-kind donations
- help plan the Making Brooklyn Bloom conference, plant giveaways, networking events, community workdays, and Greenest Block in Brooklyn competition
- maintain program databases
- respond to program inquiries
- provide administrative support, outreach, and educational materials. Occasional evening and weekend program support is required.
