The Intern, Environmental Geochemistry Research role is onsite in Menlo Park, CA, for a six-month, full-time temporary student appointment of up to 40 hours per week and no more than 980 hours. Compensation is not specified. The internship is with the Environmental Geochemistry program at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), in the SSRL Imaging department. The intern supports research into mineralogical, elemental, and hydrological processes in complex environmental systems. Through sample characterization, laboratory experiments, synchrotron measurements, data processing, and documentation, the role contributes to active environmental geochemistry research while developing scientific and technical skills.
What you'll do
- Prepare and characterize environmental soil samples using XRF, XRD, and an Elemental Analyzer for total organic carbon
- process datasets using established workflows
- assist with reactive-transport column experiments and aqueous sample preparation
- help test methods for separating biogenic iron sulfide particles from sulfate-reducing bacteria
- prepare synthetic and environmental water samples under controlled conditions, including anoxic handling when required
- organize experimental datasets and maintain laboratory records and technical documentation.
