On-Call Kitchen Assistant

The On-Call Kitchen Assistant role is onsite at the Native American Youth and Family Center’s Main Campus in Portland, OR, and pays $22–$25 per hour. The position is temporary and limited-duration, with availability generally between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and occasional evenings and weekends as assigned. NAYA serves Urban Native youth and families and provides meals to Native youth, Elders, staff, and community members. The assistant supports daily meal preparation and service, including traditional Native American dishes, events, and small-scale catering. By maintaining safe food handling and a clean, organized kitchen, the role helps the kitchen serve the community reliably.

What you'll do

• Support daily meal preparation, presentation, and service
• prepare and present traditional Native American dishes
• follow food storage, handling, preparation, cooking, and service procedures
• assist with events, catering, meetings, trainings, and other activities
• clean and care for utensils, equipment, and work areas
• follow kitchen safety and sanitation standards
• build positive relationships with staff, vendors, and community members.
