Substitute Head Start Preschool Bus Driver

The Substitute Head Start Preschool Bus Driver role is onsite in Brockton, MA; pay is $26–$27 per hour. Self Help, Inc. is a nonprofit Community Action Agency serving families and households across Southeastern Massachusetts through education, assistance, and community opportunities. The driver provides short-notice, as-needed coverage so preschool children can travel safely to and from Head Start centers when regular drivers are unavailable. The role follows assigned routes and schedules, secures and supervises children with the bus monitor, and communicates with families and program staff.

What you'll do

• Provide on-call coverage for assigned routes
• operate the bus safely and follow traffic laws and Head Start policies
• conduct pre- and post-trip inspections
• report mechanical defects
• learn routes and schedules
• oversee child loading and unloading and use of safety restraints with the bus monitor
• supervise children and support a safe environment
• follow emergency procedures
• communicate with children, parents, staff, and the public
• maintain required CDL, school bus certificate, First Aid, and CPR credentials.

Why this role

Per-diem, as-needed coverage with variable hours, potentially on morning and/or afternoon routes Monday through Friday; short-notice availability is required. Requires a Massachusetts CDL Class B or higher with school bus and passenger endorsements and a DESE School Bus Driver Certificate or ability to obtain it.
