Job overview

The Keeper I, Animal Care role is onsite in Utica, NY. Compensation is $10–$20 per hour. The position reports to the Keeper IV-Lead Keeper and Animal Department Managers. The keeper supports animal welfare through husbandry, health and behavior monitoring, training, enrichment, habitat upkeep, and guest interactions. The work also contributes to the zoo’s conservation, research, education, and animal-care efforts.

What you'll do

• Monitor animal health and behavior and communicate changes to supervisors and veterinary staff
• oversee medication administration as applicable
• complete ZIMS, Quality of Life, and Animal Welfare records
• support training, enrichment, research, and education
• use operant conditioning and enrichment techniques
• maintain habitats, holdings, and public areas
• conduct scheduled on-ground talks
• oversee interns and volunteers
• support conservation and research initiatives.

Why this role

A four-year degree in biology, psychology, or a related field is preferred; sufficient relevant experience may be considered. Must be willing to work flexible hours, weekends, and holidays, and lift 50 pounds or more.
