Payroll Specialist

The Payroll Specialist role is onsite in Durham, NC, and is expected to move to the Benson, NC office when it opens and becomes operational. Compensation is not specified. Vulcan Elements manufactures American rare-earth permanent magnets for critical industries, including defense, aerospace, and automotive. The role exists to keep employee payroll accurate, timely, and compliant as the company grows across locations. It supports employees with pay-related questions and works with Finance/Accounting and the People Partner on reconciliations, reporting, and leave accruals.

What you'll do

• Verify manager-approved timesheets
• calculate wages, overtime, and bonuses
• process regular and off-cycle payroll
• maintain benefits deduction, tax withholding, and direct deposit data
• assist with new-hire and termination payroll records
• maintain audit-ready records
• resolve payroll discrepancies and employee inquiries
• support payroll tax compliance, filings, and reconciliations
• process garnishments and levies
• reconcile payroll with the general ledger
• track PTO and leave accruals with the People Partner
• support system upgrades, integrations, and audits
• generate payroll reports for management.

Why this role
