Senior Software Engineer — Remote Sensing

The Senior Software Engineer — Remote Sensing role is onsite at one of the listed offices: Santa Barbara/Goleta, CA; Arlington, VA; or Reston, VA. The salary range is $155,000–$185,000 per year. Umbra’s Remote Sensing team turns satellite data into insights supporting national security, disaster response, and scientific discovery. The engineer develops and operates backend systems for autonomous satellite operations, including mission planning, scheduling, command, control, and communications. The role shares ownership of production services and works across engineering and operations teams to improve reliability and delivery.

What you'll do

• Design, develop, and maintain reliable, scalable, and secure software systems for satellite operations
• share ownership of critical production services
• contribute to architecture and system design
• collaborate with operations, platform engineering, and flight software
• participate in on-call rotations
• develop APIs, backend services, and data workflows
• improve observability, testing, deployment, and operational processes.
