The Culinary Specialist, Shelter Food Service role is onsite in Kansas City, MO. Compensation is $16 per hour. City Union Mission’s food service prepares nutritious meals for shelter guests, volunteers, and staff as part of its ministry to people experiencing homelessness and the urban poor. The specialist helps prepare meals and sack lunches, maintain kitchen cleanliness and food safety, and coordinate with kitchen, warehouse, and shelter staff. The role supports dependable meal service and a welcoming team environment for guests and volunteers.

What you'll do

• Maintain kitchen cleanliness to Health Department standards
• follow posted menus and obtain approval before changes
• help prepare daily sack lunches
• follow food safety practices
• work cooperatively with kitchen, warehouse, and shelter staff
• host volunteers and supervise cleanup
• document guest-related problems for the Food Service Administrator
• track meal counts and food donations
• open or close kitchens as scheduled.

Why this role

Requires quantity cooking experience, a high school diploma or GED, and manager-level food safety certification within 90 days. Must meet the organization’s stated faith, sobriety, and conduct requirements. Shifts may be 6 a.m.–2 p.m. or 10:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m.; holiday work may be requested if necessary.
